Proactively engage with business partners with a commercial mind-set to generate opportunities and to deliver robust tax risk management and mitigation plans. Support the tax compliance agenda. Support the business strategy and operational activity.The role:The North American market is extremely complex. The market is active in all areas of Diageo global business (supply, brand owner, demand) and represents 30 – 40% of global results. The legislative environment is extremely complex and evolving.Diageo Canada distributes Diageo’s brands across all Canadian provinces and manages all sales operations with the provincial liquor control boards and national chain account customers directly, using brokers to support execution at the point of sale.Tax management for Canada includes taking care of multiple management reporting packages and legal entities, and taking ownership for federal, provincial and local tax audits.Key Interactions:
  • Finance Business partners and operational teams (including FD and FC) together with the Corporate Relations Director: Build and maintain strong working relationships to understand business developments, acting as a trusted tax advisor. Ensuring the business understands the implications of any tax/regulatory changes and advise on the best course of action to ensure compliance.
  • Tax Compliance, Reporting teams - Collaborate with the relevant tax Centre of Excellence teams to provide high quality, timely tax input.
  • External Advisors - Lead the relationship with external tax advisors and hold them to account for the delivery of timely, efficient and value adding tax input.
About you
  • Leading on all Canadian tax activities relating to tax optimization, reporting, compliance and the controversy agenda including:
  • Leading the income and sales tax return preparation process at both Canadian federal and provincial levels with outside advisor support and providing tax business support to the market.
  • Gathering financial data (SAP, DBS, Regional Finance) to prepare and review cash tax and other data required for financial reporting.
  • Preparation and reviewing of compliance and reporting packages for compliance and year end.
  • Handling the relationship with Canadian tax authorities (federal and provincial)
  • Handling all Canadian transfer pricing agreements and intercompany arrangements, including the administration of all relevant Canadian withholding taxes (with support from subject matter authorities).
  • Supporting the administrative functions of the Canadian defined benefit pension plan.
  • Liaising with global treasury to handle the local Canadian treasury function.
What you'll bring
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in accounting or finance
  • CPA or equivalent post graduate qualification
  • 4+ years of experience in similar business environment with an emphasis on corporate income taxes and transfer pricing
  • Solid understanding and experience with commodity taxes
  • Ability to work independently, coordinating and prioritizing workload appropriately
  • Ability to identify, analyze and research tax issues
  • Ability to work in a team oriented environment
  • SAP experience preferred
  • Effective project management and implementation skills
  • Good team working and interpersonal skills across diverse cultures
  • Capable of adapting policies across several territories
  • Able to handle risk effectively
  • Able to embed compliance and ethics
